Reference is made to the three avenues for image reduction now being considered, and it is noted that an important question is the length of the time required to reach a given energy concentration beyond that indicated by past experience. The testing data for the Dupont 2.6-m primary mirror for the Carnegie Institution of Washington's Las Campanas Observatory (Chile) are analyzed. It is believed that this analysis can serve as a useful guide for optical figuring progress that is seen to be representative of the traditional way of making large optics. This experience can then be extrapolated to the case of tightened specifications to reach a decision whether to proceed in the traditional way or consider computer-controlled or aided polishing as a way to reduce time or convergence barriers.
