It is observed that the gravitational vacuum field equations can be conceptualized in physical terms: In all free-falling nonrotating frames, the mean time recorded by a suitably prescribed ensemble of clocks through a cubical volume L3 is independent of L if and only if the field equations Rμν=0 are satisfied by the metric tensor through the spacetime region of observation.
