Voyager images of the icy Galilean satellite Ganymede reveal that the surface is approximately equally divided into two general terrain types: a relatively dark, ancient, heavily cratered terrain, and a brighter, less heavily cratered terrain characterized by a smooth surface or abundant parallel groove sets. The authors present evidence that indicates dark cratered terrain underlies the present surface of grooved terrain at relatively shallow depth and has not been absorbed into the interior or displaced laterally to a significant degree.
