Meteorites:Parent Bodies, Planetesimals:Evolution

Scientific paper

This paper summarizes some of the properties of meteorites thought to be derived from partially differentiated planetesimals. The bulk composition and thermal history of these bodies is constrained. Physical aspects that may have controlled parent body differentiation and affected the composition of the sulfide melt are discussed. The author deals with the chemical evolution of the parent body, in particular aspects not covered by Kracher (1982). Some observations that support the model presented in this paper are briefly discussed. Attempts to reinterpret barometric and chronometric data in light of the partial differentiation model are made, and finally, tentative conclusions and a discussion of questions left unanswered by the model are offered.
