The present investigation has the objective to illustrate with a theoretical model the local-time variation of the polar cap potential which corresponds to unbalanced magnetic merging. The term 'unbalanced magnetic merging' is meant to imply dayside merging in the absence of fully compensating nightside merging, or vice versa. The ionospheric potential of bounded merging is considered along with a two-dimensional incompressible flow analog, the potential pattern of unbalanced merging, and the flow lines and equipotentials of dayside merging with no tail merging. Observations suggest flux gaps do not extend half way around the polar cap.
