An intervening gravitational lens has revealed that the structure of G1 and G2, the forming galaxies that are currently the most distant known objects is irregular and knotty. The knots in G1 and G2 are even more luminous than those typical of early starburst galaxies, indicating higher star formation rates in the distant past; this intense star-formation activity may be responsible for the gas outflows that are indicated by observations.
