This book deals primarily with the author's own experiences of Swedish and international developments in space research during the post-war period. It focuses on the developments at Kiruna, where the author was in charge of work at the Swedish Royal Academy of Sciences Geophysical Observatory, later Kiruna Geophysical Institute and the Institute for Space Physics, from the beginning in 1957 to his retirement in 1994. The latter parts of the book discuss from a general perspective the role played by basic research in the development of society and the possible role of space activity looking to the long-term future.
