Mounting evidence that the universe is accelerating has profound implications for fundamental physics. At the very least, acceleration implies the existence of a new and very different type of matter in the universe (the so-called "dark energy"). But the implications may turn out to be much more radical, possibly requiring a complete re-working of the way we formulate theories of fundamental physics. I review the current status of these issues.
