In this talk I will discuss the problem of extracting useful physics from the gravitational wave detection of a spinning-down pulsar. In particular I will ask if there is any possibility of distinguishing between the two most plausible causes of the stellar deformation, namely shear stresses in the solid crust, and strong internal magnetic fields. The resolution of this issue is both pressing and important: without a discriminatory strategy a gravitational wave observation will teach us very little indeed.
