The study of lines in the X-ray range is providing a powerful probe into the central engine and the environment of two of the most extreme objects in our Universe: active galactic nuclei (AGN) and Gamma-ray bursts (GRB). The source of energy is most likely a black hole, of stellar mass size for GRB, and millions of solar masses for AGN. I will review the key information we have gathered by this investigation and outline the future perspectives in the field, including the impact on Cosmology and galaxy formation in the early Universe.
