The effect of a morning solar eclipse on a model ionosphere has been computed. The model follows that of Hirsh (1959) but the steady-state assumption is not made and the computations are made numerically. It is shown that the "enhancement" of the F1-cusp is due to the normal decrease of the height of maximum production rate during the morning and to the decrease of the loss coefficient with height. The is found to be produced by the slowness of the approach to steady-state conditions at great heights, in agreement with the theory of Ratcliffe (1956). It is suggested that the inhibition of diffusion by the horizontal magnetic field near the equator is an important factor in the formation of the and that both the phenomena mentioned above are peculiar to eclipses which take place in the morning.
