We discuss the use of one-nucleon breakup reactions of loosely bound nuclei at intermediate energies as an indirect method in nuclear astrophysics. Existing experimental data for the breakup of ^8B at energies from 30 to 1440 MeV/nucleon on light through heavy targets are reanalyzed. We show that there exists a favorable kinematical window in which breakup reactions are highly peripheral and are dominated by the external part of the wave function. Glauber model calculations in the eikonal approximation and in the optical limit using 5 different effective interactions give consistent, though slightly different results. This comparison gives a good estimate of the accuracy we can expect from this indirect method. The results for the astrophysical factor S_17 for the key reaction in solar neutrino production ^7Be(p,γ)^8B are compared with the values from direct measurements and other indirect methods.
