Space debris and micrometeoroids usually impact upon the exposed surfaces of spacecraft at extremely high velocities. High power pulsed-laser can be used to simulate the impact of such particles, generating most of the phenomena associated with a hypervelocity impact. The theory of laser simulation of particle impacts is described and an overview of the experimental success of this technique is presented.
