The unique contributions that balloon-borne platforms can make in obtaining infrared and submillimeter data prior to the deployment of the Large Deployable Reflector are discussed. It is noted that balloon-borne telescopes permit observations of several ionic, atomic, and molecular transitions from galactic sources that are inaccessible from an airborne telescope. A large aperture (greater than 2 m diameter) balloon-borne telescope can investigate at higher spatial resolution many of the lines available to both the Infrared Space Observatory and the Space Infrared Telescope Facility.
