Using HEOS-1 plasma data, it is shown that tangential discontinuities (TDs) may be the most important contributor to the motion and speed of the earth's bow shock. The satellite data were searched for large TDs satisfying certain measurement inequalities, and enough were found to explain the measured bow-schock speeds on the basis of the present mechanism. Additional satellite data on several TDs are examined in more detail, and good statistical agreement is found between the frequency of TDs in the solar wind and the bow-shock motion, although no one-to-one correlation is evident between TD and bow-shock crossings of the satellites. It is concluded that interactions between TDs and the bow shock are probably the main cause of shock motion and that enough TDs exist in the solar wind to explain the observed large average bow-shock speeds.
