Current knowledge of wave-particle interactions in the outer magnetosphere is reviewed. Data on the role of these interactions in the earth's bow shock are briefly outlined, and their part in proton thermalization is shown to be still unexplained. It is noted that practically nothing is understood regarding such interactions in the magnetopause region. Interactions involving VLF and ELF electromagnetic waves as well as electrostatic waves are fully described, including cyclotron resonance, whistler-mode turbulence, ion-cyclotron turbulence, chorus emission, Langmuir waves, and electrostatic-mode turbulence. Current-driven turbulence is discussed together with the anomalous resistivity it causes, and it is noted that high-altitude field-aligned currents may be the source of these phenomena.
