Theoretical ionization rates for the D region, which account for nonconstant photoionization yields and the latest available measured spectra, are calculated. The rates are given as functions of individual sources, including Lyman-beta radiation, scattered Lyman-alpha radiation, stellar X-ray sources, galactic cosmic rays, diffuse galactic X-ray background, Tau X-1, and Sco X-1. Some of the profiles derived differ considerably from those given in previous publications.
