We study some simple aspects of nonlinear propagation of relativistically strong electromagnetic beams in inhomogeneous plasmas, especially in connection with effects of beam self-trapping in extended extragalactic radio sources. The two effects of (1) long scale longitudinal and radial inhomogeneities inherent to the plasma and (2) radial inhomogeneities produced by the ponderomotive force of the beam itself are investigated.
