The successes and failures of the many missions to Mars are outlined and it is noted that Mariner 9 was the first spacecraft to enter a Martian orbit. Two further missions, Vikings 1 and 2, confirmed that Mars has virtually no magnetic field and that Marsquakes occur. Material from the surface was subjected to the following three experiments to see if there is life on Mars: gas exchange, labelled release, and pyrolytic release.
