The effective gauge coupling in the higher-dimensional unification is shown to depend crucially on the Kaluza-Klein dilaton field (and thus on the position of spacetime points) whose time-evolution should ultimately be determined by the unified cosmology. The result is model-independent and obtained with the dimensional reduction by isometry. The physical implications of the result are discussed.
