The minimal set of processes which must be added to the standard solar model in order to produce a model that is compatible with all observations which have been properly validated to date is investigated. The global observations which are incompatible with, or not addressed by, the standard model are listed. It is argued that rotation, magnetic fields, and an improved theory of convection are the minimal additional considerations required. Current efforts to accomplish the model upgrading are described, and some future observational programs which are expected to have major impacts on understanding of the solar interior are discussed.
