For the particular case of circular zones, the corresponding image degradation is derived. The equations obtained lead to a general expression for the on-axis intensity of the degradation image, i.e., the Strehl number, for large-scale surface deviations (SD). Random deviations (RD) are compared with SD. It is shown that the quasi-rms value of SD has the same optical significance as the rms value of RD.
