A self-consistent theoretical model of triggered VLF emissions is developed and applied. The nonlinear interaction of cyclotron-resonant electrons with a narrow-band wavefield is analyzed, removing the time variable to study a saturated 'quasi-static' emission. Field equations are derived; the quasi-static aproximations are applied; the equations of motion of cyclotron-resonant electrons are obtained; particle-trapping dynamics and the resonant-particle current are taken into account; and the quasi-static equations are integrated. Rising, falling, and constant-frequency emissions triggered by the Siple active VLF experiment are simulated numerically, using EXOS-B distribution-function data. The results are presented graphically, and reasonable agreement is found with the observations. It is shown that particles with pitch angles of 60-70 deg play a significant role, and that generation-region losses of 80-95 percent of input power are required in the quasi-steady solutions.
