In this paper, the stability of collisionless plasma in two-dimensional field reversals is analyzed, taking into account the deterministic chaotization of electron motion in the evolving magnetotail. A mechanism is developed that is able to explain the sudden disruption of the magnetotail energy storage and the explosive onset of isolated magnetospheric substorms. The model forecasts the moment of the onset exclusively in terms of intrinsic tail parameters.
