Using a criterion based on sunspot number alone, the time series of the annual average has been decomposed into the two periodic functions R and I, which are nearly 180 deg out of phase and have closely related amplitudes. The R and I components are interpreted in terms of the solar wind, and it is found that the R component has a correlation coefficient of 0.85 with the number of sudden commencements per year and is due to sporadic or short lived solar wind sources such as solar flares, disappearing filaments and/or short lived coronal holes. The I component, upon comparison with annual average recurrence indices, is found to be due to long lived solar wind sources such as polar coronal holes.
