The importance of the dayside auroral oval in terms of energy input to the ionosphere and thermosphere during solar minimum conditions is discussed and some spatial, temporal, energetic and angular characteristics of the plasma particles which bring about the interaction between the magnetosphere and the ionosphere are described. During solar minimum conditions the dayside part of the auroral oval appears to be generally the most active part, except during strongly disturbed magnetospheric conditions. The difference between the particle distributions in the cusp and outside it in the dayside auroral oval is demonstrated and discussed.
