The accuracy of the estimates obtained by Antonov and Kholshevnikov (1980) for the representation of a potential by segments of series of spherical surface harmonics and spherical harmonics is demonstrated. The order of approximation is found to be somewhat higher for typical representatives of bodies of the terrestrial group of planets. The results indicate the fundamental limit to the accuracy of any gravimetric method based on expansions of the potential in spherical harmonics. The results are thought to be applicable to any celestial body having an irregular structure.
