Of the two thousand gamma-ray bursts detected in the last twenty-five years, only two have identified optical counterparts. Recent ground-based and HST observations suggest that both of these bursters lie in host galaxies with apparent magnitude R >~ 25. Here we propose to obtain J and H band images of these objects. These observations will allow us to place constraints on the star-formation rates and redshifts of the hosts as well as on the long-term behavior of the optical transient. This information is crucial for understanding the physical nature of these extraordinary outbursts. Because of possible confusion between the optical transient and the faint underlying host galaxy, the only telescope with sufficient resolution to undertake these observations is HST.
