We propose to use the NICMOS instrument to obtain high resolution and high signal-to-noise ratio images of radio galaxies with 1.8 < z < 3.2. At these redshifts the NICMOS 1.6Mu band-passes sample the light of the old stellar population in these massive stellar systems. The existence and photometric properties of massive elliptical galaxies at high redshift provide powerful probes of galaxy evolution. Radio galaxies presently offer the best source of candidates for evolved stellar populations at redshifts well beyond 1. We will use these images to perform surface photometry of the Lambda > 4000Angstrom light to determine if radio galaxy hosts at z ~ 2 are massive ellipticals. The derived values of R_e, central surface brightness and luminosity will be used in a fundamental-plane type analysis to assess the degree of passive evolution that has occurred in radio galaxies from z = 2 to the present. The use of two sub-samples at z = 1.8 and z = 2.7 will allow us to test for evolution within a redshift range where late type galaxies are undergoing substantial star formation. We propose to carry out this program as a survey and waive the proprietary period.
