The prominent far-UV upturn {``UVX''} in the spectra of elliptical galaxies originates from stars in their old populations which have evolved beyond the He-flash at the tip of the red giant branch. Differences between galaxies and strong gradients within galaxies demonstrate that the UVX is extraordinarily sensitive to the characteristics of its parent population--far more so than are optical/IR photometric or spectroscopic indices. STIS offers a new and unique capability for obtaining long-slit, spatially-resolved far-UV spectra of galaxies. We propose to exploit this by taking long-slit spectra of six galaxies to investigate correlations between the local properties of the UVX {temperature and amplitude} and those of the background population at the same location. The results will be of considerable importance in narrowing the list of possible mechanisms for the UVX.
