We propose to use NICMOS to study the complex dust distributions in the inner envelopes of protostars, sorting out the individual effects of rotation, outflows, and toroidal collapse. Our goals are: {1} to detect envelope holes produced by outflows, determining the effects of mass ejection on protostellar collapse, and testing theories of mass loss in early evolution; {2} to look for density gradients in infalling envelopes produced by non-spherical initial stucture, to help distinguish flattened collapsing structures from rotationally-supported disks; and {3} to attempt to detect forming disks directly. Our observations will address physical conditions in protostellar envelopes and provide deeper insight into star and protoplanetary disk formation.
