We propose to search a sample of 24 weak-line T Tauri stars in the nearby Chamaeleon and Scorpius-Centaurus star forming regions for companion brown dwarfs and giant planets using HST/NICMOS. At an age of 2 to 20 Myr these low-mass companions will be considerably brighter than more evolved brown dwarfs or giant planets orbiting main-sequence stars, and hence will be much easier to detect. We show that the spectral energy distribution of young brown dwarfs and giant planets peaks at 1.1 mu almost independently of their effective temperature. Therefore observations at 1.1 mu are suited best for detecting this kind of objects. Depending on the brightness difference between the primary and the low-mass companion we will be sensitive to separations down to 0.20'', i.e. 30 AU at a distance of 150 pc. Thus we will probe planetary systems in a range of separations where radial velocity methods are not sensitive for. Our programme will provide first observational estimates on the frequency of brown dwarfs or giant planets around young late-type stars and hence on the overall frequency of planetary systems.
