The aim of this proposal is twofold: 1} to determine the strength and spatial distribution of star formation for galaxies in a distant clusters, and 2} to measure the rotation curves of a selected subsample of these galaxies, in order to determine their mass distribution and dark matter properties. The first part will be carried out via broad-band and narrow-band {redshifted OII Lambda 3727 } imaging of the central regions of the cluster with WFPC2. The second part will be done with long-slit, intermediate-resolution STIS spectroscopy of galaxies selected from the WFPC2 images to have sufficiently bright and extended OII emission. The target is the cluster CL 0317+1521, selected because its redshift {z = 0.580} places the OII Lambda 3727 line in the narrow-band filter F588N. This allows line observations at intermediate redshift, and therefore direct information on the extent and strength of line emission.
