We propose to study SN 1987A and its nebula by taking spectra at both UV and optical wavelengths with STIS to obtain a spatially resolved map of the debris and the circumstellar rings. Supernova 1987A is a once-in-a-lifetime event that enhances our understanding of the late stages of the stellar evolution, the supernova explosion mechanism, and the interaction of the explosion with the circumstellar medium. Studying the inner ring not only tells us about the pre-explosion stellar evolution, but also the blast of radiation emitted by the supernova that ionized the ring during the explosion. We also plan to search for pulsation and thermal emission from the central energy source inside the supernova debris and evidence for shock interaction of the supernova ejectra with low density gas inside the inner ring.
