NGC 4038/9 "The Antennae" -- Colliding Galaxy Pair This pair of colliding galaxies has a starburst induced by the interaction. The region of highest energy production is heavily obscured and will clearly appear different at IR wavelengths and should be visually appealing. Scientific goals include studying the distribution of the stars produced as a function of age which can in turn be related through modeling to the dynamics of the interaction. If many galaxies form through a merger process, studying nearby examples like this pair will help validate our understanding of how such processes might work in the early Universe.
