Black Holes: Active Galactic Nuclei
Scientific paper
Massive black holes have long been thought as the most plausible "engine" for bright active galaxies. However, strong independent evidence for the existence of such exotic objects was lacking. This situation has changed dramatically in the past three years with the appearance of new evidence for very massive compact objects in nearby galaxies, and with the possible detection of strong relativistic effects expected near a black hole. Furthermore, it now appears that a massive black hole may exist at the nuclei of most galaxies. Higher quality observations expected in the next few years, may significantly strengthen the case for massive black holes.
