A model for a nighttime wave source of ionization in the ionosphere is proposed which takes into account the dependence of the source intensity on solar activity, season, and solar zenith angle. Model calculations show that the fact that electron density at heights of 140-180 km is systematically higher in winter than in summer may be due to anomalous seasonal variations of helium concentration in the upper atmosphere and a corresponding winter increase in the intensity of scattered solar UV radiation at 58.4 nm. Under quiet conditions, the midlatitude nighttime ionosphere is sustained by the scattered solar UV radiation.
