The study of interstellar chemistry involves both diffuse, dense and shocked interstellar clouds. For each of these regions, the current status of our knowledge of the chemical processes is discussed, and recent new developments both on the observational and the theoretical side are described. Important future observations, in particular those at submillimetre wavelengths, are pointed out.
