We propose to complete a sample of high-resolution spectra of interstellar absorption lines, due to the species Na I, K I, Ca II, Ca I, CH, CN, and CH^+, toward a set of 35 stars scheduled to be observed with FUSE (910-1185 Å FWHM ⪆ 15 km s^-1). The 35 sightlines all intercept translucent interstellar clouds (2 ⪉ A_V ⪉ 5), but exhibit a wide range in UV extinction properties and sample a wide variety of regions and environments. The primary goal of the FUSE observations is to obtain column densities for the various rotational levels of H_2, for constraining the local density, temperature, and radiation field [as well as the total N(H)] in these thicker clouds. Absorption lines due to HD and to various atomic species also included in the FUSE spectra will provide additional new information on D/H and on abundances and depletions in denser clouds. The proposed high-resolution (FWHM ~ 2.5-3.0 km s^-1) optical spectra, to be obtained with the coude feed using camera 5, are needed for proper interpretation of the lower resolution UV spectra (by providing information on the generally complex interstellar component structure along these lines of sight), and will also provide additional diagnostics for determining the physical conditions in the various clouds.
