We propose to obtain J-band spectroscopy with CRSP to measure the strengths of H(alpha), [NII]6583 and [SII]6717,6731 in a sample of star- forming emission line CFRS galaxies at 0.5 < z < 1.0. These measurements will be combined with high quality spectroscopy of [OII]3727, H(beta) and [OIII]4959,5007 obtained on CFHT to enable us to study the reddening, metallicity and star-formation rates in these galaxies. The metallicity will be a key diagnostic of the evolutionary state of these galaxies and will discriminate between scenarios in which they are bursting dwarf galaxies and those in which they are the growing cores of massive galaxies.
