The paper briefly reviews the discovery and characteristics of Charon, Pluto's satellite. Consideration is given to the orbital elements of the Pluto-Charon system and to the origins of Charon. The revision of Plutonian mass which the discovery of the satellite necessitates is discussed and attention is given to the question why the satellite was not discovered before.
