Over half the 3CRR sample of radio galaxies and quasars has been observed in X-rays with ROSAT pointed observations, and we present results from the data obtained. The high spatial resolution of ROSAT allows us to separate nuclear and extended components of the X-ray emission. The relationship between nuclear X-ray and core radio luminosity is consistent with a model in which every radio galaxy and quasar has a beamed nuclear soft X-ray component directly related to the radio core; we discuss the implications for the physics of the parsec-scale radio jet. Around several distant, powerful radio galaxies and quasars we find evidence for cluster environments, with 2-10 keV luminosities spanning the range between 10(43) and 10(45) ergs s(-1) . The environments of the quasars and radio galaxies are similar, as predicted by unified models.
