AMONG known binary systems suggested1-6 as possibly harbouring a black hole as a secondary, ɛ Aur7-11 and β Lyr12,13 have drawn much current attention. Both systems consist of a luminous massive primary and a faint (or invisible) secondary, whose presence is revealed largely by the eclipses it produces. From the mass function alone, each secondary must be fairly massive and is probably in the form of a disk (or ring) containing an underluminous star. This latter star has been suggested as being a collapsar.
