The scientific challenges of Soviet rocket techniques are examined. The guidelines that formed the framework of planning the first Sputnik are outlined. The details of the satellite construction are presented. The radio tracking network for Sputnik is discussed. The launching and flight of the first Sputnik allowed Soviet scientists to accumulate an invaluable store of knowledge which would open the way for future flights.
