The basic mechanisms of magnetic energy accumulation during substorms are discussed. The commencement phase of a substorm is examined in detail with attention given to the evolution of magnetospheric convection, the growth of magnetic flux in the tail region, and thinning of the plasma sheet. Models for the growth and recovery phases of substorms are developed, and data on the basic activity zones of substorms are presented.
