A method is presented for predicting peak orientation in the intensity distribution associated with the anisotropic radiation field associated with an extended stellar atmosphere. The intensity transfer equation is considered for supergiants, and the significance of the critical value for the cosine of the angle between the propagation direction and the radial direction is examined. A law describing the variation in this critical value is derived and can be used to facilitate solution of the transfer equation.
