The application of the study of supernova remnants to the investigation of physical processes in the interstellar medium is discussed. Topics examined involve the supernova remnant evolution, heavy elements, relativistic particles, and the interstellar medium. Supernovae are considered with respect to energy distribution, element synthesis, and radiation. The development of the field of supernova remnant study is summarized.
