This chapter describes how to include ‘microphysics’ (i.e. the relevant physical and chemical processes) in dynamical models of stellar outflows. The gas dynamic equations (including energy gains and losses) and the equations for a system of atomic/ionic species are introduced. The calculation of the collisional rate coefficients (recombination and ionisation) is described in detail, and a summary of how to include photoionisation processes is also done. A quite detailed description of how to compute the cooling function is presented. Finally, a summary is made of how to compute the emitted spectrum.
