I will briefly review the potential of the high-contrast capabilities of the GMT. With a D=24.5m resolving power and the collecting area of a filled 21.4-m telescope the GMT will be a powerful tool for direct imaging/spectra of extrasolar planets. With only seven segments and an inner working radius three times smaller on the sky than 8-m ExAO systems, the GMT will be a very sensitive probe for extrasolar planets.
