Analytical studies and numerical simulations of the magnetic mirror instability suggest that there may be distinctive differences between ion distributions observed in regions of different field strength. We report Active Magnetospheric Particle Tracer Explorer (AMPTE) - United Kingdom Subsatellite (UKS) observations of ion distributions associated with magnetosheath mirror waves and examined the distributions for evidence of the predicted features.
